U.S. Lawmakers Set for Greenland Visit

(MENAFN) A contingent of American congressional members will arrive in Nuuk, Greenland's capital, over the coming days, the U.S. Consulate in Nuuk announced Friday in an official statement.

The Greenlandic government extended the invitation for the visit, though the consulate withheld details about which legislators comprise the group. Local news outlets have reported that Senator Lisa Murkowski is among those expected to make the journey.

Murkowski previously traveled to Denmark alongside fellow delegation members to address rising friction stemming from U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration's public ambitions to acquire Greenland.

Throughout the visit, congressional representatives will engage with regional authorities, parliamentary members, and corporate executives to "better understand the perspectives of the Greenlandic government and people" and to "discuss bilateral relations," the consulate stated.

In a parallel development Friday, both France and Canada inaugurated diplomatic missions in Nuuk. France became the inaugural European Union member state to plant a consular flag in the self-governing Danish territory, the French Foreign Ministry confirmed Friday.

Jean-Noel Poirier assumed duties as French consul general in Nuuk, a strategic expansion of France's diplomatic footprint, the ministry announced via social media platform X.

Canada's Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Canadian Governor General Mary Simon, and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt participated in the ribbon-cutting for Canada's consulate. Simon is also scheduled to confer with Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen while in territory, local media confirmed.

The Arctic landmass—Earth's most expansive island—maintains autonomous governance under the Kingdom of Denmark, though Copenhagen retains authority over military and diplomatic matters. Since reclaiming the presidency in 2025, Trump has persistently voiced intentions to "obtain" Greenland, proposals that have faced consistent rebuke across Europe.
